An Incompatibility

Posted in Uncategorized at 9:11 pm by Perry

Can science and Christianity ever be compatible?  Are Christians to live within and be part of the world and yet have a total disregard for modern scientific knowledge?  It concerns me that there are people who hold to the belief that the earth is a mere six thousand years old.

I know that there are a vast number of sources, museums, and authors who have sought to support the idea of a catastrophic creation only a few hundred-thousand years ago; in fact, I have read a good number of such writings.  The arguments and scientific support, though, is flimsy and transparent.

Are we to believe that Adam and Eve had dinosaurs roaming through the Garden of Eden?  Is it possible that Cain and Abel had a pet velacoraptor?  Surely such an assertion is ludicrous!  If humans and animals did co-habitate then why have we not found any human skeletons (or even single bones) that have a corresponding carbon-date?  I have realized that most Christians have a very limited knowledge in these topics and even less of an interest in researching or addressing them.

I understand what the bible says when it says that the things of God are foolish to men but surely we are not to be ignorant structure, nature, and history of our planet.  A strict fundamental interpretation of the bible would obligate one to stand firm against modern scientific evidence and everything we know about the development of species through adaptation and the earth’s uniformitarian development.  To assertion that modern science and the bible are compatiable has been given a name by modern Christianity, heresy.

There are more sure marks of authenticity in the Bible than in any profane history.

Bro, you’re struggling with science compatibility as I struggled with jiving philosophical concepts. It is important, when searching, and I understand intellectually to not simply “rub off” ideas just because the Bible might say one thing (maybe this makes me a heretic).

I’ve always approach a problem that I have problem jiving with the Bible by attempting to understand the validity of the claims, and then I go to the Bible to see where it fits in–or doesn’t fit in. So, for instance you would study evolution, you can study and see the scientific inconsistencies and presuppositions that lead to the evolutionist’s answers.

Maybe this article will help. Here is an excerpt:

This is not a conflict between theology and science, but a conflict arising from a misunderstanding of the different roles theology and science play. Science and religion are not enemies, but partners complimenting each other. Religion tells us how to go to heaven; science tells us how the heavens go.

    [...]

I’d like to suggest a “radical” alternative: Restore to the scientific process the classical emphasis on truth, on identifying ideas worth believing. This is where the issue of bias takes on a completely new light.

    Press on!
