About a year ago I began to look for a new Bible. I have grown to love the English Standard Version (ESV) that embraces an “essentially literal” translation of the Scriptures while balancing readability. Unfortunately, the ESV is a relatively new translation and there are few versions available to buy.
I know exactly what I am looking for in a Bible. I wanted a cross-reference system in an ESV that was compact in size such that it could easily be carried around. Until recently, the closest version to these specifications was the ESV Classic Reference Bible that was contained the cross-reference system and an extensive concordance but was still quite large.
I am thrilled, though, that Crossway has recently release a Personal Size Reference Bible that includes both the reference system and is compact in size. The new Personal Size Reference Bible is a mediator in size between the previous Thinline ESV’s and the Compact ESV’s.
I recently ordered myself a copy of the Personal Size Reference Bible. I thought about writing an extensive review about the font, single column paragraph format, reference system, cover and other characteristics. In attempting to do so, though, I came across other who had already done such reviews. I will commend these reviews for your study and encourage you all to consider making this investment.

“There is a modern day fascination with the City of Jerusalem. It is even called “The Holy City” and Israel “The Holy Land”. The truth is that Jesus described that nation as murderous vinedressers. Jesus told His disciples to leave Jerusalem and go to the ends of the earth with the Gospel. Jesus told His disciples that outside of Israel, in the Gentile nations, they would find people willing to receive the Son and bear fruit for Him.”

The United States of America is approaching a historic landmark in the upcoming year. Election year 2008 will see a woman running for president who stands a relatively decent chance of getting elected and becoming the first female president in our country’s history. In this election we will be forced to consider not only the election issues but also whether we are comfortable voting for a woman to be the head of our nation.
For Christians this is a particularly pressing issue because we hold unique views about gender roles between men and women which are denied by the world outside the church. Christians are taught from the scriptures that the man is to be the spiritual leader of his family and head over his wife. He is to have authority over her and he is to lead her both spiritually and in matters of importance in the secular world as it relates to their family. Wives are to humbly submit to their husband’s authority and rejoice in aiding and serving her husband:
Ephesians 5:21-28
22Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. 25Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. 28In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.

“Modern Christianity has all but abandoned the roles established for men and women as dictated by the scriptures. It is no longer uncommon to have a church led by a female despite Paul’s instructions for a woman not to teach and to learn silently (1 Timothy 2:11-14). Marriages are plagued with apathetic men who refuse to take on the leadership role of the “head” of the wife as commanded throughout the New Testament (Ephesians 5:21-33). I would like to use this brief article to suggest that the modern movement away from the biblical roles and relationships of men and women not only denies scriptural teachings but also distorts our understanding of the very nature of God. I will argue that it is God’s triune nature and the relationships and roles that exist among the three Persons of the Trinity that form the foundation for the scriptural dictations for male-female relationships.”
